Another first.

Another year, another summer. Time goes by. This one is a big milestone, mostly for our little, err, big girl. She's a kindergartner!

When I went back upstairs to wake her, to climb up into her new loft bed and nuzzle her awake, I was surprised to see the door to her room open. Dangit, Mommy beat me to waking her up. I cracked open her door further to see... her already dressed, putting on her socks! She was ready.

S, on the other hand... I still have to wake him up every day, our little night owl. I secretly, or not so secretly, still enjoy it. I climb into bed with him, scratch all the tussle of hair on his head and ask him what he wants for breakfast. Then sneak back downstairs to get it ready for him, to make coffee while I hear the latest about his dream or Minecraft.

This year was the first year (if memory serves, which it often doesn't) that he was intentional with what he wore on the first day. He wanted to wear something that showed off what he liked, who he was. Alas, at even nine years old, it's still good ol' Minecraft.

Looking back through first day photos, his blinkers are long gone. His poster is a little slouchier, but still strong and straight. He's growing into his age, into his skin, into the boy we love and cherish.

Don't even get me started on that little fireball, H... Tomorrow is another first for her as she really starts kinder (the day before was a slow start with only a third of the class). Again, she went to bed excited, maybe as excited as on Christmas Eve.
